WoW Classic just celebrated its first year of operation, and what a year it’s been! Today, I wanted to share some observations that I’ve made playing WoW Classic more or less regularly this summer. It’s still a whole lot of fun even in 2020 — and here’s why!
What phase is WoW Classic in now?
Right now, WoW Classic is currently in Phase 4, which includes the Zul’Gurub raid, Green Dragon World Bosses, and more. Coming soon is one of WoW Classic’s coolest events ever, the Opening of the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj.
Is classic WoW going to have expansions?
It’s still unclear if the game will get any ‘new’ expansions such as The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King. Blizzard has said it’s “not opposed” to adding expansions to the Classic experience but no decision has yet been made.
Is it worth starting WoW classic now?
No it isn’t, especially not if you don’t have a group to progress with. Classic is essentially over now, guilds aren’t recruiting for anything, there’s barely anyone at leveling zones and dungeons (that aren’t just carries) – people are waiting for TBC.

So no, game is not dying, in fact it has been to popular now during the pandemic so that many realms had to be layered to support double the amount of players and that was just disabled today actually. But you will not see massive activity at lower lvls.

For those reasons, it is definitely worth playing Wow in 2020 to see what the early days of Shadowlands are like as the Horde and Alliance both usher in a new era for the iconic MMO. Blizzard is clearly hoping Shadowlands can help bring about another WoW renaissance and things are off to a strong start.

Classic WoW Stays Indefinitely As time goes on, most players will all be level 60 and potentially have a level 60 for each available class. There will be very few new players attracted to the game and very few people for them to play with if they did.

Both are much harder in retail than their classic equivalents. Mechanics both class and raid are much more complex and demanding, better class balance also means that min maxxing can be much more required by design. Open world no, classic is harder, not super harder but yes it’s harder there. So leveling is harder.

Is WoW Classic better than retail?
Basically classic is more challenging and retail is waaaayyy more convenient and easier to group up. You get a mount a lot quicker in retail and the world is more polished and a lot bigger and colorful.

Its never too late. At this point I would probably wait for the TBC pre-patch and the xp boost that will come along with it. You’ll also have plenty of people rerolling alts at that point. Probably.
